Wesley Sites

Finding the Father of Methodism

The Trip

As Methodists, we naturally wanted to follow the trail of founding father John Wesley. London is home to several important sites.

The photos

The Wesley Chapel on City Street is the Mother Church of Methodism. John Wesley served this congregation for the last years of his life, and he lived in the adjoining house. It is still an active Methodist Church.

Behind the chapel is John Wesley's final resting place. It's a quiet and peaceful site, even with the office building straddling the corner of the property.

In the Barbicon entertainment complex is this monument to John Wesley's Aldersgate experience which happened in a meeting house nearby.

Other places on the Wesley Trail

The Methodist Hall in London was the site of the first meeting of the United Nations, back in 1949.

At Oxford University we visited Christ Church College where both John and Charles Wesley studied as undergraduates. John's portrait hangs in the refectory there along with many other alumni and benefactors.

While on the road we spent a few nights in Burford. Wesley preached there.
