Salzburg

Land of Mozart

The Trip

Another day we spent in across the border in Salzburg, Austria, a lovely old city. It's only a two hour train ride from Munich, well worth the time.

The photos

Any fan of the movie "The Sound of Music" will love visiting Salzburg. There are tours devoted to those sights alone. Here in the Mirabell Gardens you can see the Hohensalzburg fortress on the distant hilltop. Young sister Maria was a novice at the nunnery there. Later she married Baron von Trapp in the abbey chapel.

Looking back the other way across the Mirabell Gardens you'll see the some steps. This is where the von Trapp children sang the "Do Re Mi" song in the movie.

But Salzburg is best known as the home of Wolgang Amadeus Mozart. There are three Mozart houses in the city. This is his boyhood home. The museum collection includes a number of different keyboard instruments from Mozart's time. This woman played some Mozart compositions on them for us.

But there's more than music. Did you know that the famous physicist Christian Doppler was born in Salzburg? This sign marks his birthplace.

Getreidegasse. This famous street features a number of shops, many with decorative signs.

Memorable Moments

The Salzburg cathedral is large and impressive. There are a few columns around the perimeter where musicians can sit and play their instruments for the congregation below.

Yes, we did refresh ourselves with Austrian goodies at the outdoors cafe. Twice.
